  • Beginning Birding

    Join Monica Bryand for Birding 101! Monica has been a birder for over 25 years and is the Executive Director of the Urban Bird Collective (UBC) and a board member of Hawk Ridge and the Saint Paul Bird Alliance. Monica will go over some of the main groups of birds you will see during the Spring migration and where to find them. You will get the basics of warblers, sparrows, ducks, shorebirds, raptors, and woodpeckers, among others. You will learn some of their habits, common calls, and tips on using binoculars and useful apps. While she will identify many of the Twin Cities seven-county metro hotspots, she will also share information about Minnesota’s special areas in greater MN, including Sax-Zim Bog, Hawk Ridge, State Parks along the North Shore, and others. Youth ages 12-17 may register and attend with a registered adult. The first class session on April 23 will be in a classroom setting at Wayzata Central Middle School. The second class session on April 30 will take place at Wayzata Wood-Rill SNA.

    Many possible issues and problems can and do occasionally occur when riding. We will work through flat tires, wheel issues, dropped chains, cleaning and lubing, replacing tires, and what to buy to handle the unfortunate issues. This is a mix of hands on and lecture. Please leave your bikes at home for this class.

    Many of your bike issues can be solved in this class! Major focus will be on identification of bicycle parts, trailside repair, shifting adjustments, brake adjustments, chain maintenance, how to repair/replace a tube (flat tire), how to safety check your bike. If time allows, we will also learn basic wheel truing, replacing a chain, how to replace brake and shifting cables. Please bring a bike. Especially one that needs work! Great value if you factor in a tune up!

    Defensive Driving 55+

    Save money on your car insurance premiums and become a better driver! Minnesota law requires insurance companies to offer you a 10% reduction for three years if you complete this National Safety Council's Defensive Driving course. The course is one session of classroom instruction - no driving or test is required. You will receive a certificate of completion to provide to your insurance company. Attendance is required to receive your certificate. Bring your driver's license with you to class. The instructor is certified through the MN Safety Council. This class is for both new and returning students. Online classes will take place on Zoom or Microsoft Teams. You will need to pick up your materials at the Community Ed office at 17340 County Rd 6, Plymouth, MN 55447 a few days prior to class (wait to pick up until you are notified). You will receive more information by email. If you are unable to pick up the materials call our office for other options.
